Clifford Neaole, a humble spirit and gracious host, has fostered global understanding, awareness and respect for the Hawaiian culture through his work as the Cultural Advisor for the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua. For the last 19 years he has brought “cultural correctness” to the hospitality industry. Through “Celebration of the Arts” he has been helping to create a common ground for understanding the arts.
I could have chosen many different locations for his portrait–the cliffs at Kapalua; in the elegant interior of the hotel–but I chose his ancestral taro fields, following using the tradition of using plants in portraiture as metaphors. The taro plants represent a thriving, growing, abundant Hawai’i, one that is built on a strong foundation of cultural understanding, which is what Clifford strives so hard to cultivate.
I chose to depict him in his traditional garb–to show him that though he is a man of the future, he understands “from whence he came.”
