(*500 print edition in each size, plus 50 artist’s proofs and 50 printer’s proofs)While up at the Volcano’s National Park during one of the hula performances on the authentic hula platform we found this captivating child wearing a head lei of Kukui leaves. It was noon and the sun beat straight down, highlighting the lei till it shown like a crown.
The nut of the Kukui tree, otherwise known as the Candlenut tree, was used by the Hawaiian’s, among other things, as a source of light. High in oil, once peeled they can be strung onto a stick and it can be burned like a candle. Because of this ability to highlight the dark places, the kukui is used to designate education and knowledge. When graduating from a student to a practioner from a tradition such as healing or dance, a single kukui nut, in its polished shell, is treaded onto a ribbon and presented to the graduate as a symbol of higher learning, something like a diploma. The more shells on a ribbon, the more accomplished the individual.
