In October of 2006, the Big Island was hit by a big earthquake measuring 6.7 that lasted almost a minute. Though it was kept quiet do to tourisum, the damage was extensive. Over 60 houses were destroyed, over $200 million worth of damage. But no one was hurt. I hardly know anyone in our area that didn’t sustain losses, but everyone said, “But it doesn’t matter. No one was hurt.” Bless our local people! But the following year Waimea’s Sister City in Japan, Kanazawa was not so lucky. They were hit by a 6.9 and had 193 injuries, including one death. The earthquake toppled buildings, triggered landslides and sparked a small tsunami. The old section of the city was destroyed and many of the elders of the city left homeless. We have many friends in Kanazawa and we felt terrible for their people, so I painted a picture of one of our hula dancers at Church Row during Cherry Blossom Festival, some of who’s trees were given by Kanazawa, as a fundraiser. I gave the original to the City and the made giclee prints which are sold to raise money for helping to rebuild.
