Men, or kane, were the first to dance hula. When men started to dance the old kahiko style of hula again, it sparked a huge revival of interest in the Hawaiian culture. Here, two members of the halau o kekuhi dance in the sun wearing skirts of raffia.

Men, or kane, were the first to dance hula. When men started to dance the old kahiko style of hula again, it sparked a huge revival of interest in the Hawaiian culture. In this image the men of Halau o ke Kuhi perform in a patch of sunlight in the grove at the foot of Puukohola Heiau.  One of my efforts is to record the people who keep the Hawaiian culture alive with hours of practice and study, so the rest of the world knows who they are.
