For thirteen years my husband worked for Parker Ranch.  He has the belt buckle to prove it.  He was the Curator for the Ranch and must have told tens of thousands of people the fascinating history of one of the first ranches in America.  For years it was the largest ranch under single ownership in the United States.  With over a quarter of a million acres and 50,000 head of cows it covers almost a quarter of the Big Island.  Just outside the very center of town is a place called Pukalani Stables, and it was the working stable for the ranch up until recently.  It is now a museum and you can go “talk story” with a cowboy there.

For years it was the place where the cowboys brought those calves that the mothers rejected for some reason only known to cows and there was always a little gang of them for us to take our children to see.  Those Waimea hills in the background are one of the views from our home.
